48 hours in the Algarve

48 hours in the Algarve

There’s something truly special about the Algarve. From the moment I step off the plane, I can feel the warmth - not just from the beautiful weather, but also from the people and of course, the food is unforgettable.

For as long as I can remember, this coastline has been a haven for holidaymakers like me who enjoy a touch of sophistication with an evening cocktail, looking out across golden sands and turquoise waves, while soaking up the calm vibe of the relaxed fishing villages. But the Algarve isn’t only about quiet charm - it’s also become a mecca for surfers, drawn here by some of the best waves in Europe and the widest swell Portugal has to offer.

With so much to see and do, I’ve curated my personal guide to making the most of 48 hours in this breath-taking region. Whether you’re here for a short weekend escape or a slow, sun-drenched holiday in the  comfort of your own private villa, here’s how I would spend two unforgettable days in the Algarve.

Surfers in Sagres

Day 1 Sunrise - Surf in Sagres
Start the day at the very edge of Europe - Sagres. The dramatic sea-carved cliffs, the imposing fortress, and the striking Cape St. Vincent lighthouse (the second most powerful in Europe) make this a must-visit spot. If you’re keen, grab a board and try your hand at surfing the rolling Atlantic waves, or simply enjoy being a spectator with coffee in hand, watching locals and travellers ride the swells.

After working up an appetite, Sagres offers plenty of cheerful cafés perfect for breakfast or brunch. Terra is a favourite - think freshly squeezed orange juice, strong Portuguese coffee, and the iconic pastéis de nata.

Day 1 afternoon - Riverside bliss in Alcoutim
After the salty thrill of the morning, slow things down with a scenic drive to Alcoutim. Passing through rolling hills and untouched landscapes, you’ll arrive at a peaceful riverside beach that feels like a secret hideaway. The water here is warm and inviting - perfect for floating lazily amongst the fishes.

Once you’ve had your swim, wander through the historic town. Alcoutim is steeped in heritage, from its Moorish castle and 14th-century ruins to a 17th-century riverside fort. If you’re lucky enough to visit in Spring, wildflowers bloom across the hillsides, painting the town in colour.

Day 1 sunset - From surf to turf in Almancil
For dinner, few places rival Parrilla Natural Restaurant in Almancil. Set amongst tall trees and glowing candlelight, this sophisticated spot is a feast for the senses. The wine cave is a treasure trove, and the menu is centred around perfectly grilled steaks - though the atmosphere alone is worth the visit. On Sundays, live music makes it even more special.

Pair your meal with a Coconut & Raspberry Mojito or a Passionfruit Martini and if you’re in need of a little kick-start, the Beetroot Bloody Mary won’t disappoint. It’s also not uncommon to spot a celebrity or two here - the Algarve has a way of attracting them.  Browse our range of stunning villas in Almancil.

Day 2 sunrise - Climb Foia, the Algarve’s highest peak
On your second morning, trade the coast for the mountains. Foia, the highest point in the Algarve, is an underrated gem. Few visitors make the journey, but those who do are rewarded with sweeping views of the coastline, dotted with whitewashed villages and endless greenery. Join a local guide to uncover hidden springs along the way and don’t forget to pack a light breakfast to enjoy at the summit whilst watching the world wake up below.

Dolphin spotting in the Algarve

Day 2 afternoon - Dolphins & caves by boat
The Algarve is famous for its dolphin-watching tours, and it’s an experience not to miss. We love Dreamwave, whose boats not only take you out to spot friendly pods of dolphins but also glide past secret coves, hidden caves and dramatic limestone arches.

If you’re feeling adventurous, they also offer jet-skiing, speedboat rides and even pirate ship cruises - perfect for families looking for a touch of fun. Afterwards, spend the afternoon at Praia da Falésia, a Blue Flag beach backed by striking red cliffs. Whether you’re enjoying a cocktail at a beach bar, dipping into the sea, or simply lying back on golden sands, it’s an ideal spot to while away the afternoon.

Albufeira restaurants and bars

Day 2 sunset - Dining & discovery in Albufeira
As evening falls, head to Albufeira’s charming old town. Its cobbled streets are lined with boutique shops, wine bars, and an eclectic mix of restaurants. For a fine dining experience with a twist, try Al Quimia - where presentation is as much art as cuisine. If you’re in the mood for something more casual, locals swear by Albufeira Gourmet Churrasqueira Take-Away for authentic, mouthwatering piri-piri chicken.

After dinner, stroll through the lively main square, where music fills the air and locals mix with visitors. End your evening at Pescadores Beach, cocktail in hand, as the sun dips below the horizon - the perfect farewell to the Algarve.
